The Mack Volvo Montreal Group and the Camions BL dealership in Granby (Freightliner and Western Star) crossed the ocean to be in Paris last weekend on an international recruitment mission.
Also returning from the City of Light alongside Service Director Vincent Morin was Kim Desroches, Human Resources Director at Camions BL in Granby.
Three mechanics have already signed with Camions BL, she says. The work is far from over for Ms. Desroches, as she continues discussions with two other French candidates via Skype.
“We were really proud because we thought we might come back with one new employee and we would have been happy. So now to have five…”
Since some of the candidates recruited by Camions BL are under 35 years old, the immigration process could be faster, allowing the new arrivals to start working as early as the end of summer.
“It’s really about quality of life,” she answers spontaneously when asked what seemed to motivate the French candidates to come work here. In France, there are cases where even government employees end up homeless because housing is so unaffordable in the Paris region. It’s no surprise that Quebec appears to them as an Eldorado.
The Human Resources Director is not overly concerned about the technical adaptation of her recruits, since Daimler—the parent company of Freightliner and Western Star—comes from Europe, and Mercedes trucks are very common in France. “The engine base is pretty much the same. There are small differences, but they should adapt quickly and easily,” she says, adding that the training provided in Granby will further support their integration.
