In anticipation of the new EPA emissions standards set to take effect in 2027, Cummins has launched an enhanced version of its X15 diesel engine, known for its robust performance. These new regulations require a drastic reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions, and Cummins is positioning itself as a leader by meeting these requirements while improving engine efficiency.

Impressive efficiency gains

One of the highlights of this update is a 7% improvement in fuel economy, combined with a lighter engine. Despite this weight reduction, the X15 maintains an impressive output of 600 horsepower and 2,050 lb-ft of torque, making it an ideal choice for heavy-duty applications while meeting the strictest environmental standards.

According to Jim Nebergall, General Manager of Market Strategy at Cummins, this update is the result of more than six years of research. “We are investing for today, tomorrow, and the next 30 years,” he stated. These investments demonstrate Cummins’ commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation while addressing growing environmental requirements.

An optimized design for durability

The new X15 features several mechanical improvements. The redesigned piston enables better combustion with reduced internal friction. The fuel pump—often criticized in previous versions—has also been reengineered to deliver higher injection pressure, improving soot control and contributing to overall energy efficiency.

The engine also incorporates a new electronic control module, enhanced for better cybersecurity. This module, combined with a 48-volt alternator, supports a 5 kW heating system that helps maintain optimal temperatures for exhaust aftertreatment, even when the engine is operating under low load conditions.

A complete powertrain following the acquisition of Meritor

Since acquiring Meritor, Cummins now offers a complete powertrain, combining its engine with integrated axles and transmissions. By pairing the X15 engine with the Eaton Endurant transmission and Cummins 14X HE axles, the company promises improved fuel efficiency, with overall gains of up to 7%.

Reducing emissions without sacrificing efficiency

The challenge of balancing NOx reduction with fuel efficiency is critical. By 2027, regulations require a 90% reduction in NOx, representing a major technological challenge. Cummins addresses this with a combination of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and an optimized aftertreatment system, while maintaining DEF consumption similar to previous versions.

The entire aftertreatment system has also been redesigned with larger catalysts to ensure pollutant reduction without compromising overall engine performance. Additionally, heating coils have been integrated to maintain optimal temperatures, ensuring more effective conversion of NOx into harmless gases.

Extended warranty for greater peace of mind

The new EPA regulations also require a longer mandatory warranty on emission systems. This warranty will extend to 10 years or 720,000 km, ensuring customers benefit from broader coverage. Cummins has incorporated this warranty into the base engine price, highlighting its commitment to customer satisfaction and equipment durability.

Cummins once again proves itself as a major player in the heavy-duty industry with its 2027 X15 engine, designed to meet the strictest environmental standards while delivering top-tier performance. With improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and innovations in reliability, this engine stands out as a long-term solution for fleets seeking both sustainability and power. Cummins is preparing for the future with technology that puts its customers first while meeting tomorrow’s environmental challenges.
